Strange Lake in Tanzania Turns Birds to Stone

There’s a strange lake in Tanzania Africa that is said to turn birds into stone. Nick Brandt has taken photos in Lake Natron that apparently show birds seeming to be petrified and turned into rocks.

This phenomenon of birds (and other animals) turning to stone is because of the extremely high alkalinity of the water in the lake.

The water’s alkalinity is due to the sodium carbonate and other minerals that flow into the lake from the surrounding hills.

The sodium carbonate deposits were once used in Egyptian mummification. Thus, this serves as a fantastic type of preservative for animals unlucky enough to die in the waters of Lake Natron.

However, the lake does not necessarily kill the animals by turning them to stone. There is actually a thriving ecosystem around the lake.

But, when the animals die, they eventually are preserved and seemingly turned to stone.
